For those of you who have not been to Cielo in New York City, it is arguably the finest dance club in North America, and probably among the top 10 worldwide. I had the privilege of playing a 2.5 hour opening set for Layo & Bushwacka (world-famous DJs, producers, remixers, and residents of The End in London). The night was a Global Underground album launch party for their new GU:33 Rio mix CD - which helped make it nice and packed, especially for a Tuesday. I invited about 200 of my friends to the club, and nearly all of you showed up early to show support, which was fantastic - you know who you are - thanks! Cielo's DJ booth is one the best I have ever been in, and the state of the art Funktion One sound system is second to none. It seriously breathes life into your records that you didn't even know existed. And they have this amazing crossover unit from Dope Real in Japan - wicked! But I think it got bypassed in the recording, due to the wire runs. Whatever. DJ nerd stuff, sorry. A friend commented to me that I played some tracks during my set specifically to hear them on Cielo's stacks - she was right. When I played Dubfire's rework of Plastikman's 'Spastik', the place went bananas! What a ferocious piece of music - love it. In fact, all of the seemingly minimal-sounding tracks I played went over really well because they're designed specifically for sound systems like that - especially the new sound coming out of Israel right now (Shlomi Aber, Chaim, Guy Gerber, Gel Abril, etc). Those types of records just don't feel the same way without all the texture. So - if you’re listening to this on your iPod or computer (which you most likely are), try to plug in some high-quality speakers or headphones with deep, rich bass. That being said, this mix is anything but monotone. I actually played a bit of everything and tried to build it up proper - dubby Rhythm & Sound records and cosmic disco, vocals, electro, some deep techy grooves with lush melodies progressing into tougher minimal tracks, and eventually some really banging, twisted, genre-bending stuff. I programmed everything on the fly and, like an electric current, just followed the path of least resistance. When things got into straight up techno-territory, I even got a handful of 3-deck mixes in there. Truth be told, I really love techno - always have. Which is kind of odd since I have yet to put a bona fide techno mix on my downloads page. It's probably my favorite sound these days - the most forward thinking production taking place these days in dance music is usually in techno. Anyway, the mix ends with some great techno. Perhaps my next mix will pick up where this one left off ;-)

"GAIA" MARCH 2006
This is the first ambient/chill mix that I am featuring on my site, and my first featured project since last summer. I took a hiatus from spinning for the last several months to pursue some other ventures. Well, as the saying goes, absence makes the heart grow fonder. Indeed, this is true for me when it comes to my love of music and the art of the DJ craft. This hour-long journey is a very unique and special one. I was asked by a friend to create a specific sonic experience for a charity gala event she was producing in NYC. I was honored to focus my time and energy on an event for a very worthy cause: the Happy Hearts Fund at Give 2 Asia. Czech supermodel Petra Nemcova established the Happy Hearts Fund at G2A to aid children in need who have suffered from natural disasters and other causes. The Fund's initial focus is helping children affected by the December 2004 tsunami, in Thailand, where Petra and her boyfriend were vacationing that fateful morning, as well as Aceh, Sri Lanka and India. There are very few beats throughout the musical program, as it is meant to complement a relaxing experience. I was attempting to convey the essence of a tropical sanctuary by uniting the sounds of nature with deeply emotional overtones. I suggest listening to this uninterrupted, in a calm, peaceful place. Thanks for tuning in.

"BACK TO MY ROOTS" JUNE 2005
Many feel that the DJ's role in the house music experience is all about guidance and flow; that they tap into a feeling and let it ride. This inspiration can come from anywhere and at any time- on a hot Sunday afternoon, for example. What began as a vibrant bike ride through Manhattan's Lower East Side evolved into an impromptu turntable session back at my studio. Gliding along at a sexy 123 bpm, this is the first truly deep house mix that I have featured online. It is a reflection of my arrival in NYC back in the late 90's, my first trip to Dance Tracks record store in the East Village, and of course the weekly ritual that was Body & Soul Sundays at Vinyl. That being said, this is not a mix of deep, soulful classic jams that are instantly recognizable; but rather a collection of new music that I consider deep and soulful in the relative context of house music in 2005. It is a more personal, less cerebral, and most of all uplifting listening experience. Electronic music plays heavily on ebb and flow; on the harmony and spectrum of human emotions. All of my projects have their own distinct aura and sense of place in the balance of dark and light energy- they are all an attempt to communicate something undeniably human. This journey has been mixed and programmed completely on the fly, in one take, and with love. Listen carefully to the lyrics of the closing song, they are quite beautiful. Enjoy this, wherever it may find you.

"TOUR DE FORCE" MARCH 2005
As my first featured project in several months, "Tour De Force" stands in sharp contrast to my previous mixes. Spanning a massive three hours, the listener is taken through an aural gauntlet of electronic music. Deep, minimal, funky, sleazy, dirty, housey, techy, electro, and pure acid- all genres apply. Sometimes the mixes are smooth and in-key, at other times the gloves come off. Above all, the flow is constant, the textures rich, and the emotion in perpetual flux. This is a truly underground mix done the old-fashioned way: vinyl-only, completely programmed and mixed on the fly, and recorded in one take- with no pro-tools, post-editing, or studio polish of any kind. Freely taking risks, without seeking perfection, and with no predispositions, I simply hit the record button- and this is what took place. Celebrate the moment and enjoy the ride. "WAVEFORMS VOL. 1" JULY 2004
While not as underground and tech-influenced as my usual sets, this mix is an important part of understanding my open minded attitude and very broad tastes in electronic dance music. This project places an emphasis on the transition and flow of energy from track to track. Setting the tone with deep atmospheric grooves before heading into breakbeat territory and points beyond, this is a sonic journey that is full of surprises. After climbing to a euphoric plateau, the lights get turned out for a dark tribal detour before the mood drifts into a psychadelic haze.......

"LIVE @ SOMA" MARCH 1st, 2002
The now
defunct Soma was an electronic music oasis hidden deep within the
mountains in Boulder, Colorado. This club has been cited by DJs from
around the globe as one of the best around. Although only about 400
people could cram in at once, this basement club used to go off in a
really big way. As is usually the case with most of my live sets,
this mix was programmed as it happened. Feeding off of the crowd's
rampant energy along the way, this truly eclectic mix
twists and turns through deep tech house, electro breaks, and Detroit
techno. There was a blizzard going on outside during this party, which
also featured Soma resident DJ E-Jay and my often DJ companion
Peretz aka Perry Farrell- all of whom get an audible shout out from the
club owner if you listen closely :-) This is one for the heads- enjoy
it.
